A Self Locking Actuation System

The invention is in the field of actuator systems and, particularly to a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) based actuator, lock and retract mechanism. The invention provides an SMA based self locking actuation system and associated methods. There is provided an SMA based mechanical locking mechanism which keeps a structure to its deformed state even after stopping the power supply, SMA based reconfigurable antenna system is also provided. The device comprises of a geared rack-carriage mechanism where carriage being mounted at fixed base of structure comprises appropriate spacing for rack, slots for roller bearing or a linear slider, slots adapted to hold a fixed end of a SMA actuator where linear slider and roller bearing are placed inside a housing so as to facilitate the motion of rack over carriage, housing is made up of a light weight polymer comprising Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene.
