A Super Hydrophobic Coating Composition and Coating Methods

Non-Confidential description of the invention

The Invention is a superhydrophobic coating. This invention uses cross-linked polymer (Sylgard 184) and nanostructured silica powder to modify synthetic fiber in such a way as to make it extremely water repellant. Using cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer and silica nanopowder, water loving fabrics are converted to water repellant superhydrophobic fabrics, by simple one step dip-coating followed by thermal curing for chemical bonding. This is demonstrated on polyester fabrics composed of contiguous inter-woven synthetic polymer. This technology will not only benefit garment industries but can also be exploited on other apparel such as swim wear, shoes, jackets, hats as well as various materials including leather or synthetic materials. Furthermore, it can be used for applications intended to provide rain water repellency or impermeability. Such fabrics would be used for umbrellas, tents, marquees, travel bags, canvas coverings, and sunroofs in cars or awnings.
