The present invention relates to Iron oxide nanoparticles and production method thereof. The Invention in particular provides maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) and hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoparticles and its method of production. The invention provide a method of production of maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) nanoparticles by using oil media as quenching agent/media for heated mild steel chips and provide a method of production of hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoparticles by using water or brine media as quenching agent/media for heated mild steel chips. It is a cost effective and time saving method for the production of Iron oxide nanoparticles.
