Large Area Micro-Texturing on Free-Form Surfaces by Flexible-Electrode Through-Mask Electrochemical Machining

Non-Confidential description of the invention

A novel and unique methodology is developed for electrochemical texturing of free-form metal surface with various geometrical features. The invention proposes a porous and flexible electrode based TMEMM (which can be a hand-tool or can be mounted on a machine) in which a free-form surface can be textured by adapting the shape of the surface while stamping. The capabilities of the developed device is confirmed by machining various types of texture arrays of micro-dimples, straight micro-channels, turbulated micro-channels, and micro-pillars on flat surfaces of SS304(thick flexible stainless steel). The shape adapting property of the flexible electrode is tested by texturing a cylindrical, spherical, and a surface of knee joint implant with micro-dimples. Surface micro-texturing deals the issues pertaining to various fields of engineering for enhancing the essential functions such as tribological, wetting, biocompatibility, sustainability, cleanliness etc.
