Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) Nanostructures and Process of Synthesis Thereof

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is the most popular member in the class of polysiloxanes. It is widely used in medical applications like catheters, insulation for pacemakers and ear & nose implants. It is also used in membrane based separation and purification, sensors, microfluidic devices, energy generation and storage devices. In most of these applications, it is utilized as a dense film, composite coating or as microfluidic channel. The nanoparticles of PDMS can open up a new domain in the field of nanotechnology with multifunctional applications in several domains. In this study, we report for the first time, synthesis of PDMS nanoparticles via nanoprecipitation route. The diameter of the synthesized PDMS nanoparticles was in the range of 30-40 nm. Due to their soft nature, optical transparency, chemical inertness, hydrophobicity, solvent-specific swelling, excellent biocompatibility and gas-permeability, the PDMS nanoparticles are expected to evolve as a promising material for controlled delivery of fragrances and therapeutic agents.
