Process for Synthesis of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) Nanoparticles

The present invention provides a method for the synthesis of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanoparticles via a modified nanoprecipitation route. PDMS is used in a wide variety of applications; however, it is mostly employed in the form of a dense film, composite coating or as microfluidic channel. PDMS nanoparticles have multifunctional applications in several domains due to their soft nature, optical transparency, chemical inertness, hydrophobicity, solvent-specific swelling, excellent biocompatibility and gas-permeability. The present invention provides an efficient process for the preparation of PDMS nanoparticles which is simple, robust, scalable, cost-effective, does not involve use of expensive or corrosive materials for synthesis and results in hydrophobic PDMS nanoparticles which are highly stable in water as well as in air and do not collapse after synthesis.
