Non-Confidential description of the invention

The invention relates to the field of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). More particularly it relates to a hybrid solar fuel cell (FC) where the anode comprises of a photocatalyst producing hydrogen ions (H+) by splitting of water, an electrolyte membrane as a proton-conducting layer, while the cathode is a conventional fuel cell cathode comprising of an electrocatalyst facilitating oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The invention provides a hybrid solar fuel cell (FC) based on photocatalytic water splitting wherein the anode comprises of a photocatalyst producing H+ ions by splitting of water, an electrolyte membrane as a proton-conducting layer, and cathode comprising of an electrocatalyst facilitating oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The hybrid solar fuel cell does not require stored hydrogen fuel.
