Surgical Correction of Congenital Atlanto Axial Dislocation and Basilar Invagintion by a Novel Instrument, C1/C2 Distractor and Reducer

Non-Confidential description of the invention

The invention is in the field of Neurosurgery, and is related to the craniovertebral junction, the junctional area between the skull base and the upper cervical spine. In particular, it is related to the occipital bone and the atlas and axis vertebrae. The invention attempts to bring about a three-dimensional reduction in the atlantoaxial dislocation and basilar invagination by the help of a novel surgical instrument, the C1/C2 distractor and reducer. It also suggests a surgical correction for coronal tilt and rotational tilt. Another object of the invention is to focus on reducing and stabilizing the atlantoaxial joints. As the occipital bone is not a part of the distraction procedure, it helps in reducing and stabilizing exclusively the C1-2 facet joints. This makes it biomechanically very stable as C1-2 joint fusion is more stable than the occipital-atlanto-axial joint fusion.
