System for Real-Time Dehazing of Videos Using Color Uniformity Principle

Invention relates to the field of image processing and to a method and system for dehazing images and videos in real-time by utilizing Color Uniformity Principle(CUP) in order to meet desired real-time implementation requirements. This method is suitable for applications such as vision assisted vehicle navigation in hazy/foggy weather, smart surveillance in bad weather conditions and depth map estimation. The dehazing method of the invention estimates a transmission map for an image or video scene by a hardware, wherein the transmission map is estimated based on a Color Uniformity Metric and Fast Guided Filter based smoothening. Atmospheric scattering parameter is estimated by the hardware based on the transmission map estimated in the first step. Thereafter, the method estimates radiance based on the transmission map and the atmospheric scattering parameter. Then the input the input image or video is further rectified, enhanced by utilizing adaptive histogram equalization and is outputted to a display device. The method provides high visual range in hazy and foggy weather conditions and can be implemented with low processing time.
